Halloween weekend is upon us and many family pets will be joining in the festivities. Taking a few precautions to keep your furriest family members safe ensures everyone has a spooktacular time.

We all know chocolate can be toxic to pets so make sure to keep the Halloween loot out of reach of nosy dogs and cats. In addition, have some special treats on hand so your pooch doesn’t feel left out of the action.

Know your pet’s personality and preferences and act accordingly. If your dog or cat is skittish, keeping him in a back bedroom with some soft music or white noise may make the evening more enjoyable for everyone.

Is your pet a social butterfly? Let her help you pass out candy but make sure she is wearing her ID tags along with that cute costume or festive bandanna. The chaos of opening the door a couple dozen times for trick or treaters throughout the night leaves ample opportunity for a friendly pet to wander out the door.

If you are taking your pet door to door with you, keep him on leash and make sure to use reflectors so that he (and you!) can be seen.

Most importantly, however you choose to celebrate, have fun!
