FINDING NEVERLAND Q & A with Bill Berloni

Q: What’s it like to tour with animals in the show?

WB:  It’s an exciting and wonderful challenge to travel Sammy and Bailey to a new city weekly. As they are such big dogs, I actually drive the dogs to every city. On Finding Neverland, the pups and I have driven about 33,000 miles together. We have to stop every few hours for bathroom breaks, gas stops, food breaks, and just to stretch our legs. We then arrive at our hotel for the week, unload all of our stuff (one full luggage cart, bottom to top), park the van, go for a walk and eat dinner. Our first day in the new theatre is always fun! I take our dogs for a walk around the stage in the new venue to get them acquainted with the smells associated with that theatre. We have a short rehearsal with some of the actors, then perform. One thing that always seems to surprise people is that the dogs stay in my hotel room with me. They have full run of the room and  even sleep in bed with me!

Q: What is the relevance of the dogs in the story?

WB:  Sammy and Bailey play the role of Porthos in Finding Neverland. Porthos was the real-life dog of author JM Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan. We see Porthos throughout, helping to get Barrie into the playful world of Neverland. In real-life, Barrie and Porthos were inseparable. When Barrie would go out to spend time in Kensington Gardens to find inspiration for his next play, he would have Porthos accompany him. We all know the character of Nana in Peter Pan, but did you know that role probably wouldn’t have been written without Porthos?

Q: How long does it take to train the dogs?

WB: It’s definitely a fine-tuned process. These dogs were trained by the only Tony winning animal trainer in history, Bill Berloni. Bill has been a theatrical animal trainer since about 1976, when he found and trained the original Sandy in Annie! He has a wonderful farm in Connecticut with about 30 dogs that all act in different shows. All of them know a set of basic commands that take a few months of training to set in, but they also know show-specific behaviors. Porthos in Finding Neverland knows a completely different set of behaviors than Sandy in Annie who knows a different set of behaviors than Toto in The Wizard of Oz. It varies dog-to-dog and show-to-show, but it’s a lot of months of work.

Q: What’s your favorite moment in the show?

WB:  For me, it has to be the Porthos/Nana moment in Act II. I won’t give too much away, but it is an audience favorite every night!

Q: Our publication serves to the Tulsa area metro pet -lovers, is there anything else you would like to add?

WB: Both of our dogs in Finding Neverland, along with almost every dog Berloni Theatrical Animals use, are rescue dogs. I hope that seeing these beautiful and intelligent animals onstage will give people the motivation to look into rescue animals. Adopt don’t shop!
