Happy holiday season to all the Tulsa pet lovers,Thank you for taking your time to pick up this November issue, and we hope you enjoy what’s inside! We’ve got a lot to announce, from changes in Tulsa’s drinking water treatment, to major shifts coming in the way adoptions are handled at our city shelter.

My friend Leonidas spotlights the front cover for this issue.  I’ve been a big Leonidas fan since I met him when I started the magazine, and I thought a perfect tribute would be to feature him on this cover.

He’s “stylin” in his red Christmas scarf and he’s truly a pleasure to photograph – so very laid back and well behaved. He doesn’t have a story, and he’s not famous, he’s just a really good dog! Owners of pet fish, reptiles and amphibians please take a moment to read the enclosed article on changes coming to the City’s water treatment system.   It’s important to know this information and take the necessary steps to protect your pets.

There are also significant changes coming to the City of Tulsa Animal Welfare (city shelter).  With a six-month transition, all adoptions of city shelter animals will be handled by the Humane Society of Tulsa. Some sort of change is needed, as I recently read that the city of Newark, New Jersey’s shelter puts down approximately 30 dogs per month. In August, Tulsa’s shelter euthanized 499 dogs and 366 cats, and in September, 418 dogs, and 296 cats. Of course it’s not hard to see that something is terribly wrong with this picture, and it’s urgent that all measures possible be taken to send these numbers the other way.  Time will tell if the new arrangement will benefit the animals, the only ones who truly count in this deal.  We encourage you to read this story and let us know your thoughts, and we’ll be reporting back on this situation.

We are proud to announce our new online pet business directory! It’s been totally revamped and is a true tapestry of the entire local pet community. It’s easier to access information than to use Google and will rival any phone book. Please take a moment to go and explore! 2011 has been a fast year, and it’s hard to believe it’s almost over. We’ve had a really fun time doing all the stories and have truly enjoyed each and every one of them.

Happy holidays to all, from TulsaPets Magazine. We are thankful for your support

and wish everyone and their pets a wonderful holiday season!

TulsaPets Magazine was recently invited to tour the new Animal Emergency Center, now located at 4055 S. 102nd E. Ave.in Tulsa (41st Street and US Highway 169).   The lobby is spacious and very welcoming, and feels more like a swank hotel lobby than an animal emergency hospital.

The new surgery room has state of the art lighting and equipment, and the main hospital area is arranged so that all the ER patients are in full view for continual monitoring.

The facility also has a generous backyard and nice patio area.   Our Tulsa pet owners are fortunate to have this new facility for emergency pet care.

On October 22-29 Tulsa and the surrounding areas will “turn pink” in honor of women and children who have cancer.

Ely is helping to spread the word to our local pet community – his story is in this issue and you can find more information about the event at www.turntulsapink.com Paws to Remember is an upcoming Pet Memorial and Blessing of the Animals, sponsored in part by TulsaPets Magazine.

Tulsa Animal Welfare Partners with Humane Society

TAW

TulsaPets Magazine attended a press conference this morning about new changes at the City of Tulsa Animal Welfare Shelter.   Mayor Dewey Barlett kicked off the conference stating that he is “tired of using euthanasia as a means of animal control,” and he wants to “change our present situation to make animal euthanasia, as a means of animal control, a last resort.”

He stated that in June of 2011 the City and the Shelter sent out a “request for information” to various local animal organizations, asking for suggestions on how to lower the pet overpopulation problem in Tulsa.  He received three responses:  one each from the Humane Society of Tulsa, the Tulsa SPCA, and the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.

After evaluation, the City chose the Humane Society of Tulsa (HST) to partner with as its future “exclusive” adoption service for the Tulsa shelter animals, stating HST was the only entity that could show they could accomplish these goals with no cost to the city.  He added that by moving the adoption activities to HST the city will actually save $600,000 year.

Mayor Bartlett further expanded and said there will be a six month transition period in moving all adoption services to HST.  And he added that there are three main goals for this move:

  1.  To increase homeless animal adoptions in Tulsa by a significant degree.
  2.  To decrease animal euthanasia rates in Tulsa by a significant degree, and
  3.  To allow the Tulsa shelter to become more involved in public education about spay and neuter      and responsible pet ownership.

HST President Gina Gardner then took the floor and said that their plans are to now focus their many years of experience on those animals that are in the most critical need of saving, those at the City Shelter.  She said their main goal will be to increase local adoptions and develop a very user-friendly network for our local rescue organizations to be actively involved in the program, and she also wants to expand the transfer program of sending local homeless animals to other states for adoption.

TulsaPets Magazine thinks that anything that can be done to help decrease animal euthanasia rates due to overpopulation, by placing animals into adoptive homes, and by increasing spay & neuter awareness to help prevent the problem in the first place, and by enforcing existing City ordinances, will be a very positive step in the right direction.  We wish only the best for the Humane Society of Tulsa as they begin their Herculean task.  We’ll be keeping a watchful eye on the progress and will assist in any way that we can.  We will be sure to keep you updated as the transition progresses.

Going Home

Going Home Animal Rescue & Transport is proud to show off their brand new Nissan transport van – wowee!    A donor put up half of the funds needed to purchase the van and Going Home succeeded in raising the other half.   The van is used to transport shelter animals from northeast Oklahoma to Denver, Chicago, and Minneapolis, where they will find their forever homes.   Due to strict spay/neuter laws and the enforcement of those laws, those cities actually have a shortage of adoptable animals.  The shelter in Denver takes all dogs and especially wants puppies, and the Chicago shelter that Going Home is allied with even takes special needs dogs!   Congratulations to Going Home Animal Rescue & Transport for making a huge difference for these homeless Oklahoma dogs.   To find out more information on this all volunteer group go to www.ghart.info.
