Happy Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, many people start checking off their Thanksgiving lists to ensure everything is accounted for this year.

One list includes the food, from turkey to stuffing, while another includes the long list of relatives expected this year, from that crazy aunt to the sugar-hyped nephew. But if that list of relatives does not include a family member that purrs or wags his tail, then maybe this year is the year to add one more to that list. And with this month that focuses on family and giving thanks, why not adopt a new family member that would have much to be thankful for after finding a forever home?

This month is not only about thanksgiving and family, however.

November is national Adopt a Senior Pet Month, a title given to hopefully inspire the public to not forget about those animals that are often overlooked. The sad truth is aging animals are frequently the first to be euthanized as people often search for that perfect puppy or cuddly kitten to take home. Some even assume that if an older animal finds himself in an animal shelter or rescue organization, the pet must have caused problems in the previous home. The truth is many of these animals find themselves in unfamiliar cages for many reasons, including anything from an owner’s financial hardship to the death of the animal’s previous owner.

Whatever led these older animals to the place they are in is simply a piece of their past, and aging animals still have much love to give in the future.

Plus, typically these animals are better-behaved and have already had some training. So, this November, if you feel like something is missing in your family or you just feel like adding one more, take a look at those often overlooked. At first, they might be thanking you for a home, but soon you will be thanking them for their devotion.

National Keep Pets Safe in Winter Day, Dec 22

Winter can be hazardous for people living in cold-weather regions – and for our four-legged friends. To help keep pets safe this winter, Morton Salt’s  Safe-T-Pet® brand ice melt and the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced a public service campaign that kicks off on the first day of winter, Dec. 22, with “National Keep Pets Safe in Winter Day.”

The purpose of the campaign, which runs through January 2012, is to share important pet safety tips with as many pet owners as possible to help reduce winter weather-related pet injuries and fatalities.  These tips can be found on Morton’s website (www.mortonmelters.com) and on Facebook at (www.facebook.com/MortonSalt).

As part of the campaign, Morton is making a $20,000 donation to the ASPCA to help continue its life-saving work and provide resources to pet owners on pet wellness.  In addition, for every unique Facebook fan “like” received on Morton’s Facebook page from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31, 2012, Morton will donate $1 to the ASPCA, up to $55,000. This additional funding from Morton will be used by the ASPCA to raise awareness about the importance of proper winter pet care and safety.

“Pet owners should know the importance of keeping their furry friends safe during the winter, which is what we hope to raise awareness about by teaming up with Morton for this public service campaign,” said Elysia Howard, vice president of marketing and licensing for the ASPCA.

Morton brand manager Sara Matuszak added, “The world looks different to pets when it’s covered in ice and snow.   We are proud to offer animal enthusiasts a chloride-free  ice melt that’s safer for pets in cold weather areas, and now by collaborating with the ASPCA on the ‘National Keep Pets Safe in Winter’ campaign, we hope to make a bigger difference in the lives of millions of pets and their owners.”

Low awareness of household hazards and prevention measures drive too many pet injuries and fatalities each year. Some quick guidelines for winter pet safety include:

  • Using pet-friendly (salt free and chloride free) ice melters such as Morton® Safe-T-Pet®.
  • Keeping anti-freeze high on shelves in sealed containers and quickly cleaning any spills/leakage.
  • Limiting outdoor time for pets when temperatures drop below freezing.
  • Checking warm spots on cars, such as hoods, where animals might seek shelter from the cold.
  • Keeping pets on a leash, especially dogs, which can become disoriented or lost when once familiar surroundings are covered in ice and snow; and
  • Making sure pets are wearing identification tags and proper outerwear as needed.

HERNDON, Va. (Nov. 14, 2011) – Many hotels and resorts have started welcoming pets, however, that doesn’t mean they’re fully prepared to deal with them should a pet-related emergency arise.

Today, Wag’N Enterprises announced the launch of the Personalized Emergency Training Services (P.E.T.S.) Pet Friendly Program for hotels and resorts.  The program will provide pet-friendly lodges the necessary tools to deal with emergencies that may occur and affect guests’ pets.

“As pet parents entrust their furry companions’ health and safety to your business, it becomes a hotel or resort’s duty to have staff that is properly trained to handle pet-related emergencies,” Ines de Pablo, executive director of Pet Emergency Management Division at Wag’N Enterprises, said.  “The Wag’N P.E.T.S. Program is a first-of-its-kind training program that takes a comprehensive approach in preparing for emergencies that impact pets and their parents.”

Through P.E.T.S. Pet Friendly, Wag’N provides hotels and resorts with the following services:

  • Pet first aid training certification – Wag’N’s training will prepare key hotel staff members to help deal with a pet medical emergency since there is no 911 for pets.

  • Hotel and resort branded pet safety products – Hotels and resorts may now enhance their pet-friendly offerings by carrying Wag’N’s pet-safety products, which may now be corporately branded for private-label sale.  Some of Wag’N’s innovative products include trademarked Pet First Aid Kits and Pet First Aid Bandanas.

  • Seasonal, in-room brochures with local pet-related resources – To ensure guests with pets get the most out of the city they’re visiting, Wag’N can help create custom, in-room brochures.  These brochures will highlight key resources close to where guests are staying such as veterinarians, on-site pet first aid resources, pet hospitals, pet-friendly parks, pet stores and groomers.

Sex: Male

Color(s): White & Tan

Weight: 40-45

Age: 8 Mo

Known Shots: Rabies

Adoption Fee: $75

Place this animal under: Special Needs Animals

Comments: Tuesday, Susan, an animal control officer, came up to me and asked to take photos of a 8 month old puppy she had brought in a few days earlier. She picked him up abandoned in the streets of Tulsa. This sweetheart dog was starving and was little more than a bag of bones. The worst of his troubles came from a rope embedded in his neck. Newton (the name the officer gave to the pup) was in bad shape, but inspite of his terrible condition, he is loving and grateful for the care he has received from Susan. Newton has a deep gash where the rope was removed, but this will heal. What Newton needs is a home with a loving family. He has been dealt enough suffering and pain.  Newton’s spirit remains high and love for humans is strong. Please look into your heart and ask if you can offer this dog the home he deserves.  – Bob Foshay, TulsaPets Magazine photographer.
