On May 12th, the Sapulpa Animal Shelter is having a “Good Paws Cause” clean up/fix up day!   The Sapulpa shelter is old and in dire need of repair, so a group of good-hearted volunteers are going to donate their time that day to clean, do repairs, and give a general fix up to the facility.    Pooches and the Sloppy Dog Wash are also donating gift certificates for all the volunteers working that day!  The event is from 8-4 and the group is in great need of supplies.

For clean up, they need: Round Up; Kilz; bleach; long-handled scrub brushes; hand scrub brushes; Windex; heavy plastic gloves; paint brushes, rollers (w/extension handles), pans & blue painter’s tape; & heavy-duty garbage bags.    The group said they would also accept monetary donations for specific needs supplies & materials like paint & doors.

And also needed for dogs & cats: Purina Dog & Cat Chow; dry & canned kitten/puppy food; leashes, collars, harnesses; sturdy, washable toys; large & XL black wire coated crates for showing dogs in the community & at adoptathons.

Donors can drop off supplies at the two Sloppy Dog Wash locations (4316 S. Peoria, Tulsa, or 732 W. New Orleans, Broken Arrow), or at the Sapulpa Police Department at 720 N. Walnut.

The Sapulpa Animal Shelter is located at 515 E. Fife; (918) 227-2722.   For more information, please email Elaine Palmquist at elainepq@hotmail.com.

Researchers confirm what most pet owners know

Discover Magazine’s Discoblog recently reported on a study that confirms what I’m sure most pet owners have already figured out: Cats are manipulative, dogs are easy to manipulate and they both act like babies.

I learned long ago that my dogs can be easily played. Yoda and Spock will do just about anything I ask as long as I use my excited voice.

It is easy to convince them to go outside, get in their crates at night or just about anything else when I say it as though it is the greatest thing in the world. And apparently, I was on to something.

According to the study in PLoS ONE, “dogs will prefer a plate of food preferred by a person, even if that plate has less food on it.”

Not so with cats. In fact they are the ones who will do the manipulating. Cats will use what is described as a “solicitation” purr when they want something from their owners.

I can definitely back that up. The purring is most obnoxious around meal times at my house.

The difference between cats and dogs

Have you ever had to temporarily uproot your pets? You know, board your dog while your family goes on vacation or leave your cat with a friend?

I recently moved my six (yes, six!) animals out of our home so we could have the interior painted and hard wood floors repaired.

My very gracious mother-in-law agreed to take in our gang — that’s two dogs and four cats — until the dust has cleared and the fumes have aired out.

Needless to say, it has been an adventure for all involved.

I was never too worried about the dogs. My very sociable Boston Terriers are loving their mini vacation.

More laps to sit on, more treats to eat and a bigger yard to roam. They are in Heaven!

Cats, on the other hand, never adapt quite as easily.

I brought plenty of supplies to help them transition: bedding that smells like home, favorite treats and toys and their usual litter and food. I even tried some of the pheromone therapy.

It took a few days for all of the fur to settle, but they seem to have calmed down.

What do you do for your pets when moving them to a new environment? Tell me in the comments section below.
