Nancy, Spamela, Sherri & Marilyn

Story by Marilyn King

Bonejour, Tulsa pet lovers, and welcome to my summer issue. Though the dog days of summer are fast upon us, spirits in our local pet world are higher, with serious talk on the street of a dog park, an increased focus on the Tulsa animal shelter, and overall more attention on local pet issues. I especially wish to mention a heartfelt thank you to Mayor Kathy Taylor for her positive and active role to better the future of our homeless Tulsa pets.

I finally had the pleasure of meeting Spamela Anderson as featured in my last issue.  I was joined by Sherri Goodall, author of the Spamela article, and Spamela’s “Mom” Nancy Werhane, who was gracious enough to let us come meet the famous pink babe in the flesh. When we arrived “Spammy” was asleep in a small shed (Nancy said she does like her beauty sleep), but as we walked through the pasture Nancy shook a bucket of piggy treats and we yelled her name, and pretty soon here she came, all 500 pounds of her.  She’s quite a gal – very well-behaved, and really very cute. One thing I immediately noticed was her “hair.”  It was like a brillo pad, stiff as a steel brush.  Nancy says that it grows in for the winter, and in the spring she sheds it and returns to her regular pink skin.   Another pig tidbit I didn’t know was that if she’s feeling good, and she likes you, her tail is curly. If she doesn’t feel well, or if she doesn’t like you, her tail is flat!   Fortunately, during our visit her piggy tail remained curled tight.

I must say I’ve never been quite so moved as when I met Riley, as featured on page 34, and to witness the care that Tiffany Talley, Riley’s Mom, gives him. It’s a very time-consuming procedure to equip Riley in his wheels and supervise him. Add to that the significant amount of time spent on his extensive therapies and the expense for his care.  Most people would just throw in the towel and have Riley put down, but not Tiffany. Her spirit is incredible and it’s truly gratifying to see them together.  In my book, she is voted paws down one of the World’s Best Dog Moms, and she deserves a big medal in the Dalmatian wing of doggie heaven!

I visited the Tulsa Animal Welfare Shelter on May 31 for my Shelter Report page, and was so encouraged to see it crowded with families walking the aisles looking for a new best friend, and with dogs actually being adopted and going out the front door!  It was a wonderful sight to see and I left uplifted rather than totally depressed crying all the way home as times before.

Please remember to encourage adoption from local rescue groups and shelters, and sing the words Spay & Neuter far and wide. We’re all in this together, and together I do believe we can make a better world at least for our local pets. Thank you to all, and bless all of our pets, past, present, and future.

Greetings, greater-Tulsa-area pet lovers, and I hope you enjoy this Spring issue. Even though I’m a “winter” person, I’ve never before been as thankful to see a spring!

First off I want to say thanks to all who helped make possible this issue. My advertisers, the talented contributing writers, and the people at Langdon Publishing – thank you! Without any of these people there would not be a TulsaPets Magazine.

What a sad disappointment that the proposed state bill to strengthen licensing regulations for puppy mills and improve the living conditions of these animals was shot down. Please take time to read Ruth Steinberger’s article, and visit www.okpuppymilltruth.org, to read what’s really going on with puppy mills in our state.  At the website, it’s an easy click to contact your representative in protest. Why should we even allow the creation of masses of puppies in an already critically exploding situation, and simultaneously ignore the truly inhumane conditions these poor things suffer. So please, visit and click!

On a happier note, a grass roots committee has been formed to brainstorm ideas and possibilities for a Tulsa dog park. It will be a slow process, but a process is forming. Hopefully by the July issue there will be some significant updates to report, as well as a “task force report” on recommended improvements to the Tulsa City Shelter

So you ask – who is the dog on the cover? My friends have been telling me it’s time for a good lookin’ dog to grace the cover, and I thought, hmmm, I just happen to have a nice picture handy. This is Samuel Augustus, one of my three rescued labs. (Since TulsaPets Magazine is primarily a family operation, Sam decided to help out!)   He was a stray walking down our midtown street that no one claimed, and I’m convinced someone drove into the neighborhood expressly to rid themselves of him  He’s been a blessing, and it scares me to think he very well could have ended up an inmate like the others in the article We Know on page 6.

Stay tuned to good things coming in July, and spread the word on the importance of spaying and neutering.  And when your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or others are thinking about adding to their furry family, do encourage them to go to one of shelters or rescue groups to save the life of a homeless pet.  The pet overpopulation problem isn’t their fault, it’s a human fix.  It’s all up to us.

Cheers to all you pet lovers, and Happy New Year 2008!

Welcome to Volume II, Issue Number 1 of TulsaPets Magazine! We’re kicking off our second year with some great editorial – read about the introduction in Oklahoma of the national Five Saves Lives campaign, and see the beauty and the wonder of the Macaws!    (I hate to use a very trite and trendy word, but they truly are AWESOME!)   Also, the story of the wonderful rescue of the little Convention Center dog is sure to warm many hearts!

As you may be aware, the Humane Society of the United States was commissioned by the City of Tulsa to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the practices at the Tulsa Animal Shelter. This on-site inspection/ evaluation was done in April of 2007 and took several months to complete. The task force reviewed virtually every section, practice, and condition at the shelter, from a visitor’s impression of the entryway to euthanasia and animal disposal. It’s quite chilling to read, and parts of it made me cry. Let us hope that steps will be taken to follow the recommendations in the report. It’s bad enough to be homeless and possibly injured, let alone be impounded at a shelter. That stay should provide the most comfort possible considering the conditions. Anyone wishing to read the HSUS report in its entirety can find it on our website, tulsapetsmagazine.com.

As I stated in my last letter, one of my goals was to get my magazine in some of the local libraries’ distribution centers, and that goal has been accomplished. Since there are 25 libraries in the greater Tulsa area, I was limited to the biggest five, but TulsaPets Magazine can now be found at the Central Library downtown, and the Hardesty, Martin, Rudsill, and Zarrow Regional Libraries.

I took my boy Sam to the Lab-A-Poolooza event last September, and he had an absolute ball playing with all the other dogs! They were in a secure fenced environment, and it was amazing how they all got along so well! It hit home of how much we need a dog park (or two) in Tulsa.  (Coincidentally, I tried to establish one about ten years ago, and the then-Mayor Susan Savage put me on a committee with about seven others with the same interest. Unfortunately, nothing ever materialized, but the idea is not dead.   I’ve had several recent calls and emails from people with the same interest.) I’m noodling on ways that interested Tulsans could help make a dog park happen, so stay tuned to my website tulsapetsmagazine.com for developments!

I do hope you enjoy this issue as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it — a huge thanks to my advertisers and to all who contributed!   I also want to say a special thank you to Lauren and Joe at Langdon Publishing for making the magazine happen, and to all you passionate pet lovers out there!

Until April,

Marilyn & Sam

Happy Fall, Tulsa Pet Lovers –

Hip hip hurray for the arrival of fall, my favorite time of year!   I know our furry friends are breathing a collective sigh of relief with the advent of this cooler weather here in Green Country.

It’s amazing that 2007 is nearing its close, and how fast the year has flown!   The pet world has also had its share of news in 2007:  the pet food recall with its sickening results, the evil Michael Vick and his cohorts in crime, news of pet hoarding and neglect right here in our own backyard.   To say the least, these reports are disturbing and a downright shame.

One of my favorite animal quotes ever, by the late writer and naturalist Henry Beston, goes:  “Animals are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time.”  So true.   To me, it’s a privilege to be able to live alongside the ever-fascinating animal kingdom.   It’s a relationship to be respected, especially for our domesticated friends, who are so dependent on humankind for their care and protection.

I’m ever passionate about my magazine’s mission, and I hope at least in some small way it’s creating a greater awareness of the number of our homeless animals, the importance of spaying and neutering, the abuse issues, and the overall conditions of our animals locally and throughout the state.

Someone mentioned to me the other day that she hopes that somehow, someway, the information in my magazine gets into the hands of those who most need to know.  That’s quite a dilemma, actually, as the people who most need to know most probably aren’t reading my magazine.   Then another suggestion was made to put the magazine in our libraries, particularly in the children’s section.   After some thought I realized that’s a great idea, and it’s the next thing on my to-do list.  (Thank you, Jean Baker!)   If anyone has any other ideas on how to enhance awareness for our homeless pets, please send them my way.

So, I’ll sign off until January.   As usual, a heartfelt thanks to my advertisers for their support, a huge thank you to Lauren and Joe at Langdon Publishing, and one last thanks to all of you who are enjoying the magazine.   Best wishes to all for a safe and blessed holiday season.

Marilyn & Sam

P.S.   I’ve been kicking myself since the last issue for not giving some much-needed credit where credit is due.   Thank you, Mr. Howard Hulen, for the spectacular picture of Bentley you supplied for the Summer issue’s front cover!

Dear Tulsa Pet Lovers,
Welcome to the soon-to-be-dog days of Oklahoma summer in August, and to my third issue of TulsaPets Magazine.   We do hope you enjoy it and that you spread the word to your friends and family.

First of all, I want to say hats off to our pet-loving Mayor Kathy Taylor.  Mayor Taylor’s outspoken concern for the welfare of all our Tulsa pets, especially the homeless ones, is a sign of better things to come for our animals, and the Tulsa pet community lauds you for your support in encouraging adoption and the importance of spaying and neutering.   Thank you Mayor Taylor!

I got a call from a breeder the other day wanting to advertise.   This wasn’t a puppy-mill breeder, but a local, reputable breeder who breeds high-quality pure bred dogs once a year.   I told her I couldn’t accept her advertising, nor could I list her in the directory, as it’s against my magazine’s missions of rescue/adopt and spay/neuter .   I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with pure-bred dogs (in fact, I’m pretty sure my rescued Sam here is a pure chocolate lab).  My point to her was that when there are no more pure breeds or Heinz 57 mixes at our shelters waiting for homes, then I’ll consider dogs-for-sale advertising (maybe).

After reading the enclosed article on shelter statistics in Oklahoma, I believe it will be some time before statewide conditions improve for the lives of our homeless pets.   I do think, however, that Tulsa has the capability to greatly improve the lives of OUR homeless pets, and work towards being a no-kill community, just because of the sheer number of pet lovers that are here.   The answer is simple.  It starts with responsible pet ownership education for children, adopting from one of our shelters or local rescue groups, and spaying and neutering.  If we can all unite and spread those words, then perhaps a difference can be made.

After all, as was quoted by Mohandas Gandhi (and of course “nation” can easily be changed to “city”):  “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Hope you have a super summer, and stay tuned for our October issue!

Sincerely,

Marilyn & Sam

PS  I would be remiss in not again thanking all those who have helped me in this endeavor.    My advertisers, Langdon Publishing, contributing writers, and Shelter Report sponsors all deserve a big applause.   Thank you!   And thanks to all the Tulsa pet lovers who have been enjoying the magazine.

Happy Spring to all you Tulsa Pet Lovers out there!

The joys of Spring! It turns a dog’s fancy hopeful for more walks in the park, and all the kitty’s fancies to leisure naps in the longer daylight hours. It’s a relief to have the winter of 2007 behind us, and I’m sure all creatures great and small in Green Country are enjoying this warmth on their bones. For those of you who missed my first issue, here I am with my rescued chocolate lab Samuel August us King (named after my Dad), who is one year and three months now. After I “christened” him I learned from a friend there’s an old saying that if you name your dog after someone you loved, the dog will love you more. Sam’s certainly full of love, and it gives me great joy to observe his boundless happiness.

Rather naively, I hadn’t anticipated the more sobering aspects of my new career — the horror stories coming my way of abuse and abandonment. Visits to the City shelter also give me quite a dose of reality that some of you don’t even know about. If you haven’t been there lately, go. I challenge you to not come away with a heavy heart. All the animals there are so hopeful they’ll find their way home, or be picked to get to have a home. All the little faces are wrought with anxiety, and the sadness is palpable.

One aspect that helps soften the blows of the horror stories is the number of people I’m meeting and hearing of who truly are making a difference in our homeless pet community. People who foster dogs and spend their money feeding them, tending to their health issues, trying to find them homes; others who devote all their spare time (and then some) to provide assistance in transport and countless other ways of truly giving. It’s wonderful to know there are folks out there who take a great deal of their time, energy, and resources to help. We plan to introduce you to some of these people in a future issue.

We hope you enjoy this second issue of TulsaPets Magazine, and that you share it with your friends and family. I’ve had countless emails and calls of compliments about the first issue, and I wish to say thank you to all who took their time to contact me with their positive comments. I also want to say THANKS BIG TIME to my advertisers. Without their support there would be no TulsaPets Magazine. And of course another thanks to Langdon Publishing. (They do good work, don’t they!)

I value your ideas, suggestions, questions, etc., so please don’t hesitate to call or email. Also, don’t forget that if you have a question for a vet, trainer, or attorney, please email the contact information on the respective article.

So “chow” until July. Keep those cards, letters and emails coming, and enjoy your Spring!
