Going Home

By Marilyn King

Going Home Animal Rescue & Transport is proud to show off their brand new Nissan transport van – wowee!    A donor put up half of the funds needed to purchase the van and Going Home succeeded in raising the other half.   The van is used to transport shelter animals from northeast Oklahoma to Denver, Chicago, and Minneapolis, where they will find their forever homes.   Due to strict spay/neuter laws and the enforcement of those laws, those cities actually have a shortage of adoptable animals.  The shelter in Denver takes all dogs and especially wants puppies, and the Chicago shelter that Going Home is allied with even takes special needs dogs!   Congratulations to Going Home Animal Rescue & Transport for making a huge difference for these homeless Oklahoma dogs.   To find out more information on this all volunteer group go to www.ghart.info.

ARFlogo-150

By Stacy Pettit

On the weekend, it is nice to be able to turn the alarm off in the morning, wake up without the panic of being late for work, and enjoy a big breakfast. Well, this Saturday, August 27, why not fill your belly with breakfast while also helping find owners to give belly rubs and ear scratches for homeless cats and dogs?

The Animal Rescue Foundation is hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser to raise money to find forever homes for homeless dogs and cats. This event, which begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m., will offer dog and cat lovers alike a stack of pancakes in exchange for a donation to the organization. The Applebee’s at 4733 S. Yale Ave. is providing the wait staff and stack after stack of warm, fluffy pancakes. All you need to provide is a $7 or more donation and an appetite.

ARF of Tulsa has set a goal to rescue at least 550 cats and dogs from local kill shelters this year and place them in forever homes, and the organization is hoping the stacks of buttery pancakes will help raise the funds to make that goal possible. So go ahead and dive into the butter and maple syrup covered breakfast before going on with your day. After all, you will be bringing the hope of one more day for a homeless dog or cat, and for that, you deserve to splurge.

Downward Facing Dog… Literally

Chien Zen

With the temps still sweltering, who wouldn’t welcome one more indoor activity for their canine companion? Even better, this one increases fitness for you, calmness for your dog and the bond between you both—it’s doga. Yes, you heard that correctly. Doga is a type of partner yoga between owner and pooch, says Suzi Teitelman, a Florida-based instructor. She discovered the hybrid form of yoga while practicing. Since her dog always enjoyed lying underneath her, she found a way to include him.

According to Yahoo News, she’s trained people around the world in doga, from as far away as China and Japan. She offers classes, but anyone can try doga thanks to her DVD and instruction manuals (dogadog.com).

While it’s not a great exercise activity or energy release for the dog, it’s human-animal bonding time with the animal being touched and loved, Teitelman says in the Yahoo News article. A bonus is the calming effect on the animals. One veterinarian was skeptical of a dog yoga class but after attending one she said, “”I witnessed the demeanor of the animals changing during the class. They’ll come in barking, seven, eight, nine dogs in a room, but by the end of the session, they’re sleeping. They’re in savasana (the final resting pose).”

Teaching doga for almost six years now, Teitelman says she does it because she lives it. “Doga is a part of life, and we love it!”

Assistance Dog Week

Therapetics 3A

Dogs did not receive the title as man’s best friend simply for their wiggly tails and sloppy kisses. These four-legged friends quickly become family and remain loving and devoted to their owners until the very end.

This is just one of the many reasons why dogs are often chosen to be assistance animals to aid people with disabilities.

August 7 to the 13 is International Assistance Dog Week, a week created to celebrate these dedicated and gifted animals. Whether these dogs are trained to help the blind or aid the deaf, assistance dogs work hard to bring happiness to the lives of those they lead.  And it isn’t just these dogs that put hard work into becoming a friend to those with disability-related limitations. Puppy raisers and assistance dog trainers spend long hours teaching and training these K-9s, molding them into being heroes to those who stand by their sides.

If you do not use a service dog yourself, how about helping those in need of an assistance dog? For the physically disabled, gaining one of these friends can often be difficult and costly. However, non-profit organizations like that of Therapetics Service Dogs of Oklahoma work to train and place these animals into the lives of those who need them the most. In honor of International Assistance Dog Week, donate to this and other organizations that are committed to building better lives and to shaping an unbreakable bond.
