Stop the Puppy Mills One More Time!

Oklahoma City - State Capitol

YOU CANT TAKE YOUR EYE OFF OF THEM,

EVEN FOR A MINUTE

Need help! folks to stop the attempt to halt regulation of puppy mills!

Monday at 3:30pm the Senate Agriculture Committee will be hearing HB2921 (authored by Rep. Phil Richardson and Senator Josh Breechen) which is quickly getting worse than we thought. I have attached some information as well on why this bill should be opposed. We really need calls and emails to go the Ag committee members ASAP to say the following below in orange. In addition, we need people to attend the meeting. If this bill is not heard on Monday then it will die. The committee members do not want a commotion and will be less likely to move forward on this bill if we have a good show of support. The breeders have been in attendance at these meetings but animal welfare advocates have not.

This is a sample of how your email might read or what you may want to say on the phone:

Dear Senator xxxx,

On Monday you are scheduled to hear HB2921 in the Agriculture Committee. Please oppose HB2921 which is nothing more than an attempt to halt the momentum that has been created to regulate commercial dog breeders. This bill would abolish the current rules and force the Dept of Ag to start completely over in its regulation. This is nothing more than a stall tactic to try to avoid regulation. Oklahoma is known nationwide for its substandard dog breeding operations. Delaying regulation in any way will only hinder the current progress in addressing this embarrassing problem in Oklahoma.

Sincerely,

XXXXX

Tag Day in Tulsa is April 7th, 2012

Make sure your pet has its ticket home!

Millions of lost dogs and cats are taken to animal shelters as strays each year. The odds are against pet owners ever seeing their pet again if it is not wearing identification. Only about 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats who end up in shelters without an ID tag or microchip are reunited with their owners.

In keeping with its mission to reduce the number of homeless pets, Oklahoma Alliance for Animals (OAA) sponsors Tag Day each year to encourage all pet owners to tag and microchip their companion animals. This year’s Tag Day will be on Saturday, April 7, 2012. OAA will once again be partnering with several humane organizations to provide free ID tags throughout the Tulsa area. Pet owners can receive one free tag per family; additional tags can be purchased for $5.

“Being a responsible pet owner is about more than just providing food, water and shelter,” says Jamee Suarez-Howard, Founder and President of OAA. “Pet care also includes tagging and microchipping your pet to make sure they are reunited with you if they are lost.”

Although most pet owners think their pet would never run away, even the most responsible pet owners can be accidentally separated from their pets. Keeping up to date identification on your pet provides the best chance of being reunited. Collars with tags are the most effective form of pet identification because they allow anyone to immediately identify a lost cat or dog and contact the owner. Having a collar and tag can allow your pet to be reunited with you within hours or even minutes of becoming separated from you.

However, collars can come off or be inadvertently removed which is why microchips are also an important tool in reuniting pets with owners. A microchip serves as permanent identification system that will always be with a pet. Nearly all animal shelters across the country routinely scan every animal upon intake for the presence of a microchip. Most veterinary clinics also have microchip scanners. However, microchips are not readily visible which is why having a microchip coupled with a collar and tag is important.

Both tags and microchips are only effective in reuniting a lost pet with his owner when the owner’s contact information is accurate. Tags should always reflect the most current contact information and microchips must be registered immediately in the appropriate database.  Always update your contact information promptly when you move or get a new phone number.

With the possibility of damaging storms and floods during spring, April is a great time to remind Green Country pet owners to ensure their pets have current identification.  Since storm season can present situations which are unpredictable and present the possibility of being separated from pets, having proper identification on pets ahead of time is vital for disaster preparedness.

New Emergency Preparedness Kit Features Forms for Pet Sitters and Pet Hotels

Wag’N Rover Respond’R® v3.0 Mobile Emergency Information Kit helps pets and their owners prepare for a variety of emergencies

Herndon, Virginia (March 22, 2012) – Pet safety innovator Wag’N Enterprises this week unveiled a comprehensive addition to their Wag’N Rover Respond’R® Mobile Emergency Information Kit. The updated kit now gives pet owners the ability to communicate vital information to pet sitters and pet boarding facilities.

The third version of the kit includes two new forms. The new “Pet Sitter” form provides a pet’s temporary guardian with detailed instructions and an action plan in the event that the owner is unreachable or incapacitated due to an emergency situation. Likewise the new “Pet Boarding” form contains meticulous instructions for both the boarding facility and first responders in case of an emergency.

Accidents happen and, whether a pet travels with its owner, gets boarded at a pet hotel or remains at home whilst supervised by pet sitters, emergency situations can greatly impact the well being of all four-legged friends. When important pet information cannot be communicated due to parental impairment, standard and critical pet care may be delayed or suspended. Wag’N Enterprises created the Wag’N Rover Respond’R® v3.0 Mobile Emergency Information Kit to equip pet parents with all the pet emergency preparedness documents necessary in case of an emergency, and to help keep an unfortunate situation from becoming a devastating one.

Being prepared for a pet-related medical emergency, accident, or disaster is invaluable—especially when tensions are high. This interactive kit assists pet owners in providing EMS, police, as well as fire and rescue responders with important contact and pet information.

“This updated version of the Wag’N Rover Respond’R® kit gives pet owners peace of mind whether they are traveling with their pets, away from home and/or away from their pets, “ says Ines de Pablo, President & CEO and national pet safety expert and advocate. “By having these easy to complete, yet comprehensive preparedness forms at their fingertips, pet sitters and pet boarding facilities now possess the tools to take even better care of their four legged guests.”

Wag’N also announced that its Wag’N Rover Respond’R® Mobile Emergency Information Kit version 3.0 and all further releases will be included as an fundamental element of its Personalized Emergency Training services (PETS) Program™, aimed at providing top of line pet safety and pet emergency management training services to pet boarding facilities, kennels, animal shelters and pet sitters. “Wag’N take an all-hazards approach to pet safety. Any facility that kennels and cares for pets needs to have plans in place to respond to natural and/or man-made emergencies to keep it from becoming a disaster.” De Pablo stated.

Pet owners can complete the interactive PDF forms on their computer, or print them out and/or fill the information in by hand. One copy goes to the pet sitter or boarding facility, and one copy stays with the pet owner, tucked safely into the folder pocket of the kit. After filling out the required documentation, pet parents simply place the completed Rover Respond’R® 3.0 kit in the glove box of their vehicle and affix the included alert decals to tell first responders about its existence and whereabouts.

The following items are included in the Wag’N Rover Respond’R® v3.0 kit:

  • 1 Mobile Emergency Pocket Folder (document carrier)
  • 1 Wag’N Rover Respond’R® Vehicle Alert Decals
  • 2 Wag’N Rover Respond’R® Home Alert Decals to alert first responders of the number of pets in the home.
  • 2 Wag’N Rover Respond’R® Animal Transport Forms for first responder use during an emergency only.
  • 1 Wag’N Pet Passport® for documenting a pet’s medical history, proof of ownership and vaccinations, a photo of the pet and emergency contact numbers.
  • 1 CD-ROM with interactive documentation forms including a Pet Owner Information Form, Emergency Contact Form, Pet Profile Form, Pet Boarding and Pet Sitter Forms, printable Emergency Wallet Card, printable Lost Pet Poster and Printable Stolen Pet Poster.

The Wag’N Rover Respond’R® v3.0 kit is affordably priced at $34.95, and is available for both retail and wholesale distribution. Since pet parents can save all the information on their computers, information can easily be updated and reprinted when they need it and no matter what types and numbers of pets they own. “The only constant is change. As life wags along, pet parents can now easily prepare for the unexpected” De Pablo affirmed.

The winners are in!

Judges convened today to determine the winners of Studio D’s annual “Cutest Pet Contest.”   With a record 92 entries to view, they certainly had their work cut out for them!   Judging for this year’s contest were D’Ann Berson, Executive Director of the Tulsa SPCA, Lori Hall, Operations Manager of the Tulsa SPCA, and Marilyn King, Publisher of TulsaPets Magazine.

After much hard work and deliberation, they decided the Top Dog goes to Gracie Mae (owners, Steve and Sandi King).  Peaches garnered the second place title (owner, Stephanie Brucks), and third place went to Maggie (owner, Heather Ashcraft).

Contestants made a $10 donation to the Tulsa SPCA, and a whopping $731 was proudly handed over, which will be used for the great cause of helping the animals at the local Tulsa SPCA shelter.

Congratulations to the top winners, and to all the contestants who participated!
