Some science. Some chaos. A whole lot of heart.

25% Mystery DNA — The shelter guessed “Lab mix,” but the ears, tail and attitude suggest at least four other breeds and possibly a woodland animal.

20% Wiggles — Mutts don’t just wag their tails. They wag their entire existence.

15% Chaos — This includes muddy paws, random zoomies and the occasional decision to sprint through the house at full speed for absolutely no reason.

10% Couch Hogging — No matter their size, mutts firmly believe they are lap dogs and the couch belongs to them now.

10% Selective Hearing — Cannot hear “come.” Can hear a cheese wrapper open from two rooms away.

5% Muddy Paw Prints — A mutt can find the only puddle in a five-mile radius with astonishing accuracy.

5% Emotional Support — They somehow know when you’ve had a bad day and quietly stay close, like a furry little therapist who works for snacks.

5% Zoomies — Usually triggered by excitement, bath time or invisible forces beyond human understanding.

5% Drama — Dinner is late by three minutes? Clearly this is betrayal.

100% Love — Because somehow mutts always give more than they’re made of.

Part mystery, part masterpiece, every mutt is entirely their own.

More Than a Mix

Celebrating National Mutt Day

National Mutt Day, recognized twice a year on July 31 and December 2, celebrates the personality, resilience and charm of mixed-breed dogs. With the rise of DNA testing and millions of shelter adoptions each year, mutts are getting the recognition they deserve, not for what breeds they are, but for the loyal companions they become.

By the Numbers

Animal shelters and rescues across America took in approximately 5.8 million cats and dogs in 2025, with more than 4.2 million adopted into homes.

About 44-55% of pet dogs in U.S. households are estimated to be mixed breeds — meaning mutts are actually more common than many people realize.

Mixed breeds represent about 80% of dogs in shelters.

The Rise of Dog DNA Testing

Dog DNA tests have become a popular way for pet owners to uncover their pup’s breed mix, health traits and ancestry. Industry estimates show nearly 9 million tests were performed in 2023 alone, reflecting how mainstream this trend has become. From mystery mutts to designer mixes, more owners are curious than ever about what makes their dogs unique.
